How to keep HHO Electrolyte from freezing during winter

Postby EddieRock on Tue Nov 25, 2008 12:06 am

HHO Electrolyte solution is OK to freeze in the winter but it can cause your HHO generator to produce less hho or worst case it may crack the housing. It's better to keep it from freezing. Here is a solution that works well...

Ingredents:
-------------
White Vinegar
Baking Soda
Isopropyl Alcohol
Hydrogen Peroxide

Mix 3 table spoons soda and two ounces vinegar in a pan. These will react and make ascetic acid and sodium acetate (this is used to de-se airport runways). This will bubble as it reacts.

3 cups of rain water and warm it up (or use melted snow) then add the above solution.
stir until it is dissolved. Let cool.
Add 1 cup of isopropyl alcohol and mix
Add two capfuls of hydrogen peroxide

Now to test... Just drop a 9 volt battery in solution and the battery should bubble.

When you say "Electrolyte", do you mean to say the water/baking soda mixture?
I have determined my water/baking soda mixture and I add about an ounce of Denatured Alcohol to prevent freezing. Of course, I am only in NC, not the frozen tundra of the great north. A hard freeze down here is about 23 degrees F.
What say you?

the freezing issue was one of my concerns.i think i will try the guy from north carolinas idea.as the weather in arkansas should be close to north carolina weather.what differance would rain water make .why not distilled water.i do know hydrogen peroxide heats things up.i tried it as a cataylist.what would a few drops of antifreeze do.thank you

Hi I am in the north of the U.K. where the lowest winter temp. gets to minus 5 or 6 degrees. Of course we all use antifreeze in our car cooling systems. My problem is; I am a complete novice to HHO and will gratefully accept any and all help that can be sent my way on the subject of installation and maintainance of a system :P Or indeed if anyone can recomend an off the shelf system.

i tried the vinegar, baking soda, alchol, hydrogen peroxide mix and after a few miles my cell and wiring started heating up.my wiring got so hot you could barely hold your hand on it .anytime i use hydrogen peroxide it causes everything to heat up.has anyone else had this problem.!!!!thank you

Maybe you used too much. How much did you use?

Another way to keep your HHO electrolytic cell from freezing is to simply use Methyl alcohol. This has a great freezing point depressant for water. This is the same active ingredent as windshield washer fluid. This is the product HEET "Gas Line Anti-Freeze" in the yellow bottle (NOT THE RED BOTTLE). Wikipedia indicates you should use 20% methanol by volume to keep your cell from freezing down to 11F (-12C).

By the way, it is OK for your cell to freeze. It will thaw out quickly but the HHO production will be less until it is up to temp but I hear this question all the time...

Also, this product's side effect is to produce hydrogen as well ;)

Hi guys ,
Many years ago I lived in the UK up north on the Pennines. B----- Cold. Looking at some of the solutions for the non freezing problem rings some alarm bells for me. Mixing any of the alcohol bases - Ispropynol, Metho etc. Especially if the catalyst one is using is KOH ( Potassium Hydroxide) Mix KOH with alcohol and you create a chemical solution called METHOXIDE!!!. Not something to be silly with, like not wearing gloves or eye protection etc. I know the KOH dosage we use for the HHO is a small dose but it is still Methoxide. Worth Looking up Google. Not to splash in eyes or skin contact etc. KOH is Hydrogenous and exogenous. This means it absorbs moisture from atmosphere and loses some potency, also when mixed with alcohols (metho is 95% alcohol for instance)it is also exogenous meaning it will heat up to touch. if screwed up tight straight after mixing it can heat up and expand like a soda and expands, it is also stuff you try not to inhale. It is ok when mixed well and cap can be screwed down safely. It depends on dosage etc. Just some guide lines for keeping safe. This is meant to be fun, so, stay safe.

Regards

Another solution to keep it from freezing is to use a Battery Warmer. Just wrap your HHO generator with it and connect it up. They sell them in 110v and 12v. This has been recommended by Water4Gas and other HHO sites.

You can get them at http://www.padheaters.com/ or http://infinitipartspeople.com/

Re frozen generator
Comon sense is all that is needed. If you have a HHO device and you know that you live in a "freeze climate" it will freeze! Do you you really need the HHO at freeze point start up? It (HHO) will not do much good until the engine is at operating temp anway. If your engine requires a block heater then so does your HHO generator. Use or install a bypass/activate (on-off) switch (( should have one anyway)). Please stay away from using anti-icing/freezing chemicals. The time that it takes to warm up the vehicle to be drivable (heater comfort zone) the engine compartment is also warm and should be the generator ( if not hit the "ON" switch).Take care

P.S. If using acrylic/poly carbonate protect from extreme ( cold or heat) crackling or hazing may not be visable.
