Use Goop!

Postby kyle on Sun Mar 01, 2009 5:37 pm

FYI - I ran into a snag the other day... I was doing a bench test... The generator was producing HHO, but no HHO was coming out of the hose. I later found out that it was my 2-part epoxy that was the problem. It had broken loose around some of the fittings, thus letting the HHO escape. The fittings that had GOOP on them had not broken. I'm only using Goop from now on as it seems to bond better with the plastic and metal.

GOOP is a "Brand Name" for a sealant/adhesive that many (plumbers) use. It is available in several formulas for different applications. I use it on every fitting on my cells. It is readily available at H.D./Lowes/any good hardware store, in their sealants section (with all the caulks etc.) and I have tried several others, but found that GOOP really is the best sealant. A tube will last you for several builds. ANY leakage is not acceptable, as your pressure loss will ruin the cells ability to perform for your application.
Another note is that if you build your container from ABS or PVC pipe, do NOT use the normal glue that they recommend. These solvent weld glues break down from the Hydrogen. Remember that Hydrogen is the smallest element, and it can get between the space where this glue would be. The best adhesive that I have found is the two part epoxy (also sold at the same place) "Jiffy Weld". It is a bit pricey, but the results without it cost significantly more in both damage and lost time, let alone the need to have to repair something that you have spent time on already.
Best to you all out there in HHO land...
Do not fear our opponents; they are too blind to understand; they somehow, cannot offer proof that what we already know, does not work, and that we do not understand...

The way I avoid leaks, is to use a tapered pie thread. I.E. BSPT. I find Loctite wick in is the best sealant. Have been using this brand all my working life and I am retired now. Loctite makes a whole range of engineering sealants and glue for stopping nuts and bolts coming lose.
Also if I want to make a permanent fixture, with stainless steel. I solder it using silver solder with at least 40% silver. Very expensive but a perfect seal and you use very little.
